Soul Train Participates in 30 Hour Famine

By Toni Stith
March 14, 2004

On February 26 and 27, 2004, the youth group of Community Presbyterian Church (and the leaders) participated in World Vision’s 30 hour famine. We were busy during our 30 hours of fasting.

On Thursday, we learned about World Vision, the Christian humanitarian organization that serves the world's poorest children and families in nearly 100 countries.  We also learned about our responsibility to the poor and hungry through Bible Study.

We held a short prayer vigil.  We sat in a circle and as we each prayed, we lighted our neighbor’s candle.  By the end, all candles were lit and we saw the light of Jesus shine through the darkness.

We made wind chimes to deliver to the Meals on Wheels recipients.

We played some games and had shaved ice at dessert time.

We watched a movie and got to bed late!

Very early Friday morning, we took turns serving breakfast at the Salvation Army.  Dixon Moorhead helped us. Everyone enjoyed this activity.

Later that morning, we delivered Meals on Wheels to people in North Fargo and South Fargo.  They were happy to see us and they even shook our hands!

In the afternoon, we went on a Scavenger Hunt at Wal-Mart and Cheep Foods.  We each had $10 to buy as many items for the Emergency Food Pantry of Fargo-Moorhead as we could.

We delivered it to the food pantry and the director let us sort the donated items and stock them on the shelves.  We even got to help fill orders for people in need.

By the time we got back to the church, we were tired and hungry but had less than 2 hours until we ate.  We relaxed; then read about the starvation that occurs in other countries.  We felt better knowing that in just a little while we would have food, where others would be hungry for days.

Finally, it was time to eat, and the whole church smelled of bacon.  We thanked God for our food and we finally ate!

Thank you to those people who made that wonderful meal!

Before we ate, we all had a time of reflection and you would be surprised how mature we had become in just 30 hours of fasting, praying, and serving those who were hungry.
